I received an email from a friend the other day that contained a wonderful video clip. It shows Red Skelton doing a skit about the Pledge of Allegiance, and how a school teacher of his taught him and his classmates the real meaning behind the words. I remembered the skit, having grown up on Red Skelton and his ingenious pantomimes and hysterical sketches.
Watching the skit, though, reminded me of how very important it is to teach our children the real meaning of those things of great importance in life. As Christians, our children should know who God really is, what heaven is all about, what Jesus did on the cross, and what it means to be saved.
Leaving that knowledge to once-a-week Sunday school classes or weekly youth group meetings just won’t be enough to protect our children from the wiles of the world, their own flesh or Satan. We are literally in daily warfare for their souls, or if not, we should be. It will only be a short time before they are engaging in the world without the daily influence of our parental guidance. We need to make the most of our time together and teach them what being a Christian, a Christ follower, really means.
Take a lesson from Red’s school teacher from long ago. Teach your child about who God really is.
