The book currently sitting on my nightstand is Family Driven Faith by Voddie Baucham Jr. and I’ve gotten about halfway through it. I had read and heard some good things about the book and ordered it through inter-library loan to get a hold of it.
Boy, it’s like looking at myself in a mirror. Dr. Baucham doesn’t tout himself as a family expert, but a Bible expert who knows how to apply biblical principles to the family. He and his wife Bridget come from two generations of family where divorce has been prevalent (22 out of 25 marriages on both sides), but because they both made the choice to follow biblical principles in their family’s life, they have enjoyed not only a fruitful union but godly children (see Malachi 2:15).
This quote out of Chapter 6, Live The Word At Home, sums up the overall theme of the book:
Moses makes it clear that multigenerational faithfulness is an all-day, everyday process. We must teach our children at all times. Moreover, we are always to teach according to the commandments of God. This may sound simple, but I assure you it is profound. If this is true, then the Bible must govern the method and manner I employ in training and discipling my children. I cannot simply use cultural, secular humanist methods and expect to reap biblical results.
The book is well written, engaging and an easy read with “Take Action” points at the end of the chapters. While it doesn’t necessarily give you the how-to (that’s what TGMT is for!), Family Driven Faith is deep in Scripturally founded reasons for why it’s so important to be a God-centered, Bible-teaching, Christ-seeking family.
If you want more of an idea of where Pastor Baucham is coming from, he has several videos on Youtube, including this brief discussion of his reaction the first time he came across a family who held weekly devotions.
This is an excellent book. I highly recommend it for laying a foundation for where you want to go with your family.
