Puzzles and puzzle games are popular with a lot of children and can make learning fun. Here’s another easy way to teach your child the Ten Commandments that takes only minutes a day.
Write each commandment on a strip of colored construction paper or an index card. Shuffle the commandments up, then have your child assemble them into correct order, starting with “You shall have no other gods before me.”
It is perfectly all right to allow your child to reference the Bible (Deuteronomy 5: 6-21) for the first few times of doing this activity. The goal, lest we forget, is for them to master the Ten Commandments. At some point, when you think he’s ready for the challenge, take the Bible away and see how far he gets. Praise whatever progress is made and go back to the Bible as often as necessary.
For pre-reading children, use the poster print-outs from Garden of Praise as a substitute. There are blank outlines that your child can color in before playing the puzzle game. In this case, lay the posters on the floor or a large table in random order. As you read the commandments off in order to your child from the Bible, have her point to or retrieve the corresponding poster.
For storage, place the paper strips in a resealable bag or the posters in a file folder for easy access. Spend five minutes a day playing this game with your child and she will have the Ten Commandments down in no time.
